Why the need for Polygamy among deities ??

In Hinduism, Dwaitham means the soul is considered different from God and this concept is needed if one feels that he/she must attend to his/her worldly duties according to society’s norms. However, Athdwaitham means that the soul and God are one. This is the state of enlightenment when all worldly desires are usually neglected to attain spiritual bliss. Seldom do these two practices co-exist.

Having said this, there are some of our deities who have two wives, we have to be mindful that these Gods are beyond worldly desires and they require to manifest in order for their devotees to see them. This is already self-evident that they do not require mortal or carnal connections, let alone satisfy any bodily functions.

Why then have two or more wives?? Firstly, the reason for appearing with their wives shows that they educate humans to cherish their spouses who according to birth and death have an inevitable communion in the life of a householder. The number of wives appearing with the respective deities are personifications of their extended powers. They are the separate strengths of the said deity. The separation is to emphasize the significance of these said powers. Why else would they require two wives? For carnal connections like our fellow humans?

It would be inappropriate for a human to say I married my second wife for spiritual reasons and do not require carnal connections with her… is it not?

Some may even take these deities as a reference to satisfy their carnal desires. There isn’t a need and one should own up to his actions and be upfront about his intentions rather than referencing greatness (God) for one’s worldly flaws…

God is gr8.
