Lord Shiva is a deity who has the vision of the past, the present and the future. Being such, the incident of immolating Kama came into play. It was understood that Kama was assigned by Indira the king of the Devas to arouse lust onto the Lord. The Devas were in great need for a solution on the growing danger of the Asuras conquering the universe. Therefore this action was sanctioned by Indira to get Lord Shiva to unite with Mother Sakthi who was reincarnated after her untimely death aeons ago.
Lord Shiva went into seclusion and deep meditation as he always used to. However, after the death of Mother Sakthi as he is, in fact, the Lord who is equated with Love. He was said to be distraught after her death. However, we have to understand that if not for his role as a husband to educate the world he would be constantly immersed in eternal meditation.
Kama following Indira's orders fired the arrow of lust onto Lord Shiva which did nothing but wake him from his deep meditation. Meditation has been emphasized by Shiva in all his actions as a means to reach salvation. Lord Shiva knowing all, yet appeared enraged and with his third eye burned Kama into ashes. This action was seen by all as just God destroying someone in anger.
However, if we apply this with modern times now. We may conquer all emotions that may deviate us from meditation but if noticed clearly, the only overpowering emotion that leads us strongly away from devotion is Lust. It not only hinders salvation through meditation, but it also creates birth. It starts another set of suffering and cycles of turmoil. It is now clearer now than then at the instance the Lord immolated Kama, why it was done and the importance of controlling Lust.
Guruvae Sharanam.
