The saint Kumara Gurubarar was known not to be able to speak till the age of 5. His parents brought him to Thiruchenthoor a famous Lord Murugar Temple in the south which is a miracle on its own. There, they fasted for 45 days and followed austerities and decided to drown themselves in the nearby sea if Kumarar was not able to speak after that.
On the 45th day since their son was not able to speak the parents left him at the Lord sanctum and proceeded to the sea to drown themselves. To their surprise, Kumarar stopped them by calling out to them. Not only did he do so. He also started singing poems in praise of Lord Murugar fluently !! He was gifted with poetry skill that was phenomenal.
Likewise later in his life, there was a period where due to the invasion and apprehension of the Moghuls, Varanasi (Kashi) was ruled by a Sultan Dara Shukoh (eldest son of Shah Jahan, who was later killed by Aurangazeb). This was somewhere in the year 1658 CE. This king was only able to speak Hindi and Kumarar sang the Sakalakal Valli song in praise of Mother Saraswathi where he was bestowed the ability to speak Hindi in order for the Sultan to understand him !!
Even then the adamant Sultan who disrespected Kumarar at his court did not even offer a seat to the divine Saint to state his claims. Kumarar then prayed to Parasakthi who provided him with her Lion as a seat and the Saint majestically rode on the lion’s back into the court of the stubborn Sultan. Inclusive of his subjects the Sultan panicked. It was during this occurrence that the Sultan realised he was dealing with a form of divinity that he could not explain.
Yet, when Kumarar asked for a place to build a Matam (Institute of divine studies) the relentless Sultan said that since Kashi has no place where eagles circle in the sky. He would award any place on Kashi where the eagles circle above in the sky. Kumarar then prayed to Lord Shiva and true enough eagles circled the sky above the present Kedhar Eashwaraswamy Temple at the Kedharghat !! This is situated near the Kumaraswamy Matam build in veneration of Kumarar.
