Aadhi Shankarar, the divine saint and philosopher, a man who in his short life span of 32yrs was ordained by Lord Shiva to be an enlightened soul. Shankarar was born to impart the knowledge of Advaitha( Non-duality) to the world. Non-duality, meaning the soul and God being a single entity or in short, the same.
Shankarar was born to clear the doubts of the way led during that era where this concept would have been forgotten or even destroyed totally without guidance. None the less, being a novice at that time and getting his knowledge from only the scriptures and Gurus that he was blessed with, he was at a certain stage not fully immersed in what he preached. It probably was and is not known by many that being a wholistic ascetic does not happen due to impulses or through an introduction. One has to experience the concept of asceticism.
As for why was it that all such divine knowledge was initiated in India some may ask? Divine knowledge needs to propagate from somewhere. Well, a seed of tree must be sowed somewhere to provide shade for all, is it not? Likewise, the place picked was India and before one reaches out to the world, he must be qualified thoroughly. A teacher's knowledge and thoughts are survived by his students. Since the mortal coils of life allowed Aadhi Shankarar only 32yrs of his life, this was sufficient for humanity to follow without being spoon-fed on the theory of Advaitha.
Lord Shiva, wanted a perfect teacher for Advaitha to be propagated. Therefore he decided to clear the uncertainty left for Shankakrar to be ordained a true enlightened soul. The venue chosen for this divine play was at Varanasi (Kashi), the Lord disguised himself as an untouchable called a 'Chandalan' with 4 dogs being the 4 Vedas tied to a leash held by him. Shankarar was on his way to pay his respects to the Lord Kashi Vishwanathar in Kashi and as always he and his devotees saw the approaching "Chandalan" and asked him to move away. The omnipresent Lord then questioned Shankarar, " Who do you want me to move?" "Is it the soul that is the main driving force of this lifeless body or is it this body that is not able to function if the soul moves away?" "If it is the soul that is equivalent to God as Advaitha states why must it move being an object of purity?"
Upon hearing this, Adhi Shankarar's mind was enlightened and he prostrated to this Chandalan who appeared to be a divine teacher in the body of an untouchable. It was then that the Lord manifested his true self in front of Adhi Shankarar blessing him to achieve all that he was born for.
The Lord had appeared with the 4 dogs on a leash signifying the 4 Vedas are in his grasp and are in his control. The ideology behind this manifestation is to confirm to the world that the Vedas may be codes that humans may adhere to but they are in the grasp of the Lord. He precedes all that the Vedas have depicted.
